OVERVIEW
The Greater Mekong Subregion Elimination of Malaria through Surveillance (GEMS+) project supports national malaria programs (NMPs) in Lao PDR to integrate the private sector into national malaria elimination strategies, surveillance systems, planning, and management structures. <br>It is anticipated that at the end of GEMS+, NMPs will be equipped to manage a refined network of private providers who have been trained and supervised to provide quality malaria case management and report malaria cases into the national surveillance systems.
VISION
In the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) 40-78% of the population first seek health care in the private sector. To achieve malaria elimination, we need sustained private sector engagement. GEMS+ represents an ambitious 3-year investment with the primary objective of transitioning private sector malaria programs to government oversight by 2022.
MISSION
To transition PSI network (PPM) to government ownership by 2022, GEMS+ will work with national malaria programs (NMPs) to refine the number of private providers. This will be accomplished by working with NMPs using epidemiological data reflected national malaria stratification and health-seeking behavior data to identify areas where it is rational for private providers to operate. Furthermore, PSI will work with NMPs to adapt private sector support models to a level that is feasible for NMPs, while maintaining the quality of care provided.
TARGET
429 private providers in our Public-Private Mix (PPM) network will be transitioned under government oversight and management by the end of the year 2022.
HOW WE
WORK
Here are some milestones we've achieved in the fight against malaria:
312 PPMs from 35 districts
gathered to participate in a refresher training, and an additional 117 PPMs (32 PPMs in the south and 85 PPMs in the north) received on-site training.
in the north and 7 PPMs in select districts in the south transitioned under government management.
and reporting positive cases via the Facebook Messenger Chatbot.
PSI received Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) approval letters from 10 provinces in our GEMS+ target areas of implementation.
In 2020, the PPM outlets scored 99.7% on the Routine Data Quality Assessment (RDQA) for private malaria providers, which is an increase from 99% in 2018-2019.
From 2018-2020, PSI supported PPM testing of 180,455 suspected malaria cases and provided treatment to 2,198 positive cases
We support national governments to implement the most efficient vector control strategy for their population to reach universal preventative coverage against malaria. We primarily support vector control activities related to increasing efficient coverage and proper use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). We use data and research to routinely analyze and improve our delivery of ITN interventions.
